Solstice Center October 2008

The picture to the left shows the radiant floor tubing that is currently being installed in the big room - over which will go a brand-new oak sprung floor. Dancing at Solstice will never be the same! Reinforcements have been made to the roof of the big room, upon which will be mounted 6 Thermal-Solar pannels, delivering sustainable heat for the entire building. The Solstice Center is starting to live up to it's name! Helpful links: our on-line-calendar or our Website.

Special events this October

Jin Hai, A Buddhist Monk from California will be gathering for sutra copying in the Skylight Room Oct 5, 12, 19, and 26 from 8:00 - 11:00 a.m.

In Jin's words:

"My immediate interest is in copying the Sutra of the Past Vows of Earth Store Bodhisattva (a sacred text), and possibly illuminating it, for the benefit of an elderly friend here in Gold Hill with heart problems.

I feel like I need to do this as soon as possible. This Sutra Copying practice is very, very powerful if done properly, respectfully and singlemindedly.

When I first came to Boulder (from my monastery in California), I couldn't find a Buddhist monastery in the area. So I stayed alone for a couple of weeks in a lovely cottage up at the Ashram (Truth Consciousness, on Gold Hill, founded by Swami Amar Joti). The nuns there were very generous and kind.

Then, I felt that I needed to come on down the mountain (Gold Hill) to Boulder...in order to get to work on setting up Great Compassion House.

I was offered a ride by a long-term resident of Gold Hill, who also was suddenly moved to give me a place to stay. Then, her parents, a very sweet elderly couple put me up - invited me to stay with them. They are very special people - very kind. And I am still with them after a month. The husband suffers from heart problems.

I am going to copy the sutra for his sake - for Bob's sake...copy it and dedicate it to him. The Sutra of the Past Vows of Earth Store Bodhisattva is extremely powerful for eliminating karma. In fact, it was the recitation of this sutra which liberated my husband from his long-term state of (as it says in the sutra) "...not being able to get well, and not being able to die."

My hope is that if I reverently and carefully copy out the sutra for Bob, it will extend his life and lessen his suffering. So that is the intention and the plan. I feel that I need a clear space - full of light - in which to accomplish this task. In the absence of a proper monastery, Solstice Center seems just right."

Although the primary writing of Earth Store Bodhisattva is nearly unknown in the West, it is a primary Buddhist Scripture in Tibet. The unique journeys of Ksitigarbha are laid out in picturesque detail and allow a reader to truly experience the hells as he saw them.

His whole life was dedicated to going into the hells and lower worlds to liberate souls from these places and teach the rest of humanity the reasons for various hells, the means in which we get there, and the path to liberate ourselves from such misconduct.

Dance Home Thursday 10/2 : DJ Dave subs for Reed

Dave Weil has generously agreed to sub for DJ Reedantha on Thursday.
Reed has found himself smitten by a pernicious virus, so to manifest
sufficient mojo and channel music from across the cosmos (or even just
Alpha Centauri) is simply not a credible proposition this week. Dave's
a pal to step in on short notice.

And remember that we are in the cozy Skylight Room for all of October
while the big room undergoes a much-needed face lift.

Dance Home is Boulder's Barefoot Boogie
Free-form dancing
Community environment
Comfortable yet adventurous

302 Pearl St. (side entrance)
Thursdays, 8 PM to 11:30 PM
